The Film Downfall

The film Downfall directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel was released in the year 2004 and stars Bruni Ganz, Alexandra Maria Lara and Ulrich Matthes. The story is based on the leader of the Nazi regime and his last days as a dictator. Reviews show that this movie has a high rating amongst critics and is a favorite of many people.

The film begins with a documentary of Hitlers Secretary Trudi Junges and the story progresses as the Red Army approaches Berlin. It was the battle of Berlin when Hitler vowed to either defeat the army in Berlin or else face his downfall. There was no room for surrender for Hitler.

The plot of this movie revolves around the final days of Hitler and the time when many of his soldiers abandoned him whereas many stayed loyal to him. As the movie progresses, the destruction of the once powerful and famous Hitler becomes inevitable. It covers aspects of his life involving depression and the desire to commit suicide because of depression due to failure. Eventually Hitler along with his wife commit suicide after which their bodies are burnt according to the will so the Russians would not get ahold of the dead bodies. Furthermore, Hitlers insanity is accurately depicted in the film. The scenes portraying his insanity include Hitler screaming at his soldiers and then ordering them to be killed for abandoning him and leaving Berlin.

Another theme that this movie touches is the loyalty of the Nazi towards their leader Hitler. An example is Hitlers Secretary who helped Hitler write his will and then wanted to be killed after Hitlers death. Although she survived, she did not appreciate a world without Adolf Hitler. Similarly, many German soldiers commit suicide after Hitler death as they did not want to live in a world without Hitlers influence. The General who was so loyal to Hitler believed the world ended with Hitlers death and therefore ended up poisoning his children and committing suicide too. Moreover, another theme of this film is the final days of the Battle of Berlin. The events that occurred are accurately depicted with details such as Hitler refusing to surrender and agreeing to use children for the war.

Thus, it can be seen that Downfall is one of the few movies based on the Nazi regime that educate viewers about the events that occurred in that time period of History.
