Stress is a state of mental strain, and if escalated can prove to be quite dangerous for one’s health. However, in common cases, the victim is unable to identify stress as the cause for medical issues they may be facing. It is important to know when you’re succumbing to stress.
Stress can be exhibited in different ways; it may be displayed in the form of a change in habits, physical pain, or sickness.
For some people, stress may affect their diet; some may delve into overeating, while others may stop eating properly entirely. This will results in weight gain or loss, both of which are dangerous and can lower one’s immunity, leading to illness.
Other symptoms include physical pain. Excess stress can result in the patient suffering from migraines, or jaw pain. Stress can also lead to muscle and joint pain; the victim may have face back pain, neck aches and muscle spasms.
Stress may start off as symptoms, but it can develop into a potentially permanent problem.
A victim of stress may turn to a means of relieving it; such as smoking, alcohol or drugs. This almost always results in addiction, which can damage one’s life entirely. Furthermore, studies show that consuming such substances does not relieve stress, and instead it may lead to a permanent state of stress.
Stress may also take a toll on one’s mental health, for the worse. Anxiety and depression are common ailments in victims of long-term stress. This may result in patients becoming withdrawn socially, and some may suffer from panic-attacks. Another change in behavior induced by stress is irritability and frustration. Due to this, individuals may permanently damage their relationships with friends and family, and end up alone.
Unfortunately, stress can develop even further, and have even greater consequences. Chronic stress can result in heart problems, and research shows that it can lead to cardiac arrest, strokes, and similar cases.
Moreover, stress can dramatically harm one’s immune system. Long-term stress can cause insomnia, eating disorders, and hormone imbalance. As a result, the immune system suffers. This leaves the victim prone to diseases, and stomach illnesses such as diarrhea.
Stress is known as the ‘silent-killer’, and this is rightfully so. If anyone suspects they suffer from stress symptoms, they should seek help immediately, before it becomes a long-term issue, which can have adverse effects on one’s life.
